I ought to do some work. So I take Drew and Sarah out of school and spend all day in the movie theatre.
We watch Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Could have been a lot worse, actually. What’s wrong with being an old action hero? The Naked Jungle stuff is pretty cool (if just slightly immoral, in the way that it gleefully dispenses with an overly villainous villain). And minutes later it’s all left me.
Next up is Speed Racer. That’s speed racing, literally. Technically, something exhilaratingly new. There are boyish high spirits, and archetypal resonance, and wisdom about families and growing up. Plus the kids and the chimp are better than six movies worth of R2-D2 and C-3PO.
We go back. I’m kind of thrilled, in part because of the company. Maybe they’re just tolerating, or getting a free movie. Or is there affection in the banter and the rolling eyes?
